Fungal Research lab

Our research is focused on the isolation and identification of medically important fungi from clinical samples. This team is led by Professor Dr. Firoz Ahmed and Assistant Professor Dr. Khandokar Fahmida Sultana from the Department. Currently, we are working on isolation and identification of dermatophytes from infected patients in collaboration with Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College, Noakhali and Chittagong Medical College. We employ conventional techniques for identification of dermatophytes as well as cutting edge technologies i.e. RFLP-PCR assay and high throughput genome sequencing. In addition, antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolated fungal strains is also determined in our lab which will help physicians to prescribe appropriate drugs in an adequate dose. Currently, we are also working on discovering new effective drug against dermatophytes from medicinal plants.
